Wyre Forest is increasingly popular with walkers and cyclists but most do tend to concentrate on the area around the visitor centre. This walk explores more peaceful parts of the forest around Pound Green and Hawkbatch, where you have a very good chance of encountering fallow deer. It also includes Seckley Wood, where there is an excellent viewpoint overlooking the River Severn, Upper Arley and Trimpley Reservoirs.

THERE was a once Roman camp at Kempsey, near the site of the present church. Roman coins, tiles and an inscribed stone were dug up in 1818 in the vicarage garden. The Romans weren't the first to live here; there was an Iron Age community on the site long before the legions marched in.

It was Shakespeare that made the Forest of Arden famous, but even that connection could not save it. Today, it exists in name only, with just small fragments of the woods, commons and marshes which made up the forest still surviving. However, there is still plenty of attractive countryside around Henley-in-Arden, criss-crossed by well-trodden footpaths which testify to its popularity with walkers.

LIKE last week's walk, this one is in the area covered by the Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark. Also like last week's walk, some of the footpaths are sub-standard, though they are all usable without much difficulty.
