Plans for new floodlit sports area welcomed
PEOPLE living in a Worcester suburb have welcomed the news that a multi-use games area and youth shelter is to be built in their area.
As previously reported in your Worcester News, Worcester City Council approved plans to build a flood-lit all-weather pitch and £5,000 shelter in St Peter's last month.
The news was announced at a recent meeting of Police and Communities Together (PACT), chaired by police for residents of St Peter's and Battenhall, where it received a warm welcome, particularly from members of the youth PACT.
City councillor Roger Knight, also a member of St Peter's Parish Council, which is behind the scheme, said there would be a five-a-side football pitch and basketball nets. He said he was waiting for final signatures for the land transfer before work could begin and reassured youngsters the area would be lockable but not locked.
He said: "I feel it should be open and free for our community. If it's vandalised and abused it will have to be locked. If it is looked after it will be there to use."
He said there would be a chance for the area to be booked for exclusive use, such as by a team that wished to play league games.
Youngsters who attended the meeting had earlier said they wanted more sports facilities, along with an indoor skateboard park.
However, Peter Cook, a panel member, asked if there would be issues with young people from other areas, such as Kempsey, near Worcester, or Warndon Villages, Worcester, coming to use the site.
He said: "Youngsters from Kempsey are going to be coming. I think if Kempsey doesn't get something similar they will invade and they will be jealous."
The games area will be built on overgrown land opposite Rainthorpe Avenue, near St Peter's Baptist Church.
