Police stop man jumping in river
POLICE officers managed to talk a man out of jumping off a bridge and into the river Avon on the outskirts of Pershore.
The police and firefighters rushed to Bridge Street at about 7.20pm on Tuesday. Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service launched a boat in case the man entered the water.
A police spokesman said the road was closed off to traffic with diversions in place for about an hour.
"We had an incident where a gentleman was indicating he might jump off the bridge," he said.
"He was talked down and he was initially taken into police custody but he has since been released."
The spokesman said the man left the bridge accompanied by a police sergeant about 8.10pm and arrested under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act, but later released from custody at Worcester Police Station in Castle Street.
The spokesman said: "We were successful in talking him down and that's it. It caused a fair amount of disruption but there was a happy ending."
Fire brigade spokesman Alec Mackie said firefighters played a supporting role to the police and remained at the scene throughout.

Poor chap. I'm glad they caught him in time - another tricky job for our trained "Professional Services", once again.
Well done! Always nice to know that help is at hand, at sad times like this.

Mr Mackie appears to have conveniently forgotten the volunteers from Mercia Inshore Search and Rescue who also attended the incident, having been called out by Fire Control
