THE power failure that forced firefighters to abandon Worcester's central fire station has been fixed.

Firefighters and emergency control operators are now back at their posts in the Deansway station, five days after a major power cut left them without electricity or communication lines.

On Monday (March 25), your Worcester News reported how Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service quickly put into action an emergency contingency plan that saw firefighters and their vehicles moved to the Territorial Army (TA) headquarters in Silver Street, Worcester, and fire control operators moved to the secondary control centre at Droitwich.

Alec Mackie, spokesman for the fire service, said the move went smoothly.

"The fire engines have all come back to Deansway and the fire operators are back in the control room.

"We'd just like to thank the military authority for their help while the problem was fixed."

Mr Mackie added that there had been no risk to the public and no inconvenience to emergency calls.

The power failure was caused by an internal fault.

While it was the first time in at least 10 years the service had to resort to its contingency plan, staff were prepared as they often practice for such incidents.
