Award deadline looms large
INSPIRATIONAL building projects in Worcester are being sought for the prestigious annual City Awards Scheme.
The scheme, which began in 1981, aims to recognise and encourage works that have made a significant contribution to the environmental improvement of Worcester and entries are now open for this year's competition.
Nominations can come from any quarter, including architects, builders, developers and members of the public. Entries can be either full-scale newbuild or renovation works but can equally be just a smaller project such as a sympathetic paint scheme or new shop front, or detailing such as landscaping, paving or boundary treatments.
John Wrightson, head of urban environment at Worcester City Council explained: "The City Awards Scheme has recognised and rewarded a wide range of improvements to the physical and aesthetic quality of Worcester.
"The council appreciates the contributions made to the city by enhancements to the built environment and our aim in presenting these awards is to encourage further schemes of the highest quality."
Last year the award was won by Redhill Primary School, an especially environmentally friendly building of exceptional design. Previous award winners include St George's Roman Catholic School, Reindeer Court, The Alliance and Leicester, Charter Place, 22-24 Friar Street, Huntingdon Hall, Southco Factory and Warndon Court Farmhouse.
Judges will consider all aspects of a project with the key criteria including the harmony of old and new, scale of project relative to its surroundings, detail design, choice of materials and overall craftsmanship.
The deadline for nominations is Friday, May 30.
The judging will take place in early September when the winners will be announced. Nominations can be sent via email to cmwilliams@worcester.gov.uk or online at www.worcester.gov.uk
