Criticism over Droitwich development

A DEVELOPER has hit back at criticism about the company's role in developing the western side of Droitwich town centre.

Last month, we reported how some Droitwich councillors were disappointed by the work being carried out in the town centre by Kandahar.

The next phase of the work is a planned expansion of the western side of the Salters Shopping Centre, which would involve building on council-run car parks.

At a public meeting councillors called for Wychavon District Council to put the expansion out to tender, rather than allow Kandahar to do it.

However, Kandahar director Mike Tyler has now confirmed the company owns the car parks, and leases them to the district council.

Mr Tyler said: "We own the freehold of the car parks. They have a lease where they run the car parks and that lease is a long lease so they are a party.

"We have to drive it because we are funding it."

He added Kandahar was going to start a public consultation process and wanted to talk to youth groups and families about what they would like to see in the area to ensure the developer had a representative view.

Mr Tyler said the consultation would start soon and would provide valuable feedback but the only certainty was that a supermarket would be retained and upgraded.

I walked through Droitwich Town whilst visiting family and cant believe that they are spending so much money on all the work being carried out and they cant even get the floor flat, the joining of the slabs are very uneven and teh elderly and children who may not be able to walk as good as many are going to have problems, there will be several accidents, i can see it coming!

what we need is free car parking not a tax of 70p every time we shop and we don't need a multistorey carpark
